A friend asks you to send $240. Before opening Venmo, one detail needs settling: do they want dollars in an app balance, or do they want 240 PYUSD in a crypto account or wallet?
Venmo supports buying and selling one PYUSD for one U.S. dollar.1 That relationship makes the amounts easy to compare, but it does not make every payment path interchangeable. The recipient’s desired asset, account, and network determine which flow to use, what to check, and whether another conversion will be necessary.
Check the account before choosing a route
Venmo’s crypto FAQ limits crypto transactions to personal profiles and requires identity verification, including an SSN or ITIN. It excludes business and charity profiles. The same FAQ explains that, from May 19, 2026, crypto services are provided by PayPal Digital, doing business as Venmo Digital, while the U.S. dollar balance remains under Venmo.2
The governing crypto terms require U.S. or territorial residence, adult eligibility, and a qualifying personal account in good standing. They specifically exclude Venmo Teen Accounts and note that feature availability can vary by location.3 An ordinary Venmo account does not automatically establish access to every crypto feature.
Custody is another useful distinction. Venmo says customers own purchased crypto but do not receive its private key.4 A PYUSD balance in the app is therefore a different arrangement from holding tokens in a wallet for which you control the keys. Decide which arrangement the recipient actually needs before moving anything.
Decide whether the recipient wants PYUSD or dollars
Venmo’s PYUSD guidance permits transfers to other Venmo users, PayPal accounts, and compatible external wallets.1 These routes deliver a crypto asset. Sending PYUSD to someone who needs ordinary spending money may add a sale or withdrawal to their journey.
There is also an ordinary payment connection between Venmo and PayPal. Current Venmo guidance says users can find a PayPal recipient by phone number and send money across the platforms where available. Domestic payments funded by a Venmo balance, bank account, or debit card have no sending fee; international charges and currency conversion may apply.5
That ordinary payment feature should be considered separately from PYUSD transfers. Someone whose goal is receiving a conventional PayPal payment may have no reason to acquire a stablecoin first.
Agree on the destination in plain language: dollars in a payment balance, PYUSD in the recipient’s app, or PYUSD at a particular external address. This small conversation prevents a surprisingly large amount of confusion.
Buy PYUSD, then prepare the transfer
If PYUSD is the agreed asset, Venmo’s buying guidance allows an available Venmo balance, linked bank account, or debit card as funding. Credit cards cannot fund crypto purchases. The purchase flow is accessed through the Crypto tab, and a purchase may take additional time or fail.6
For sending, choose PYUSD, open the transfer arrows, and select Send. Enter the requested recipient details, including a Venmo username or wallet address as appropriate, confirm the wallet type if prompted, and review the amount before submission.7
A PayPal recipient can obtain PYUSD receiving details from PayPal’s Receive flow and choose the relevant network. Share the information for that selection, including any additional fields displayed.8 A display name alone should never substitute for the destination information required by the chosen transfer flow.
Before approving the transaction, compare the destination with the recipient’s instructions and review the displayed fee. If the recipient has changed wallets since your last payment, treat it as a new destination. A saved entry is convenient evidence of a previous instruction, not confirmation of today’s intended recipient.
Check the asset, network, and address together
Venmo’s transfer help describes PYUSD transfers using Ethereum and Solana, with supported network choices presented during the transaction. Both parties must select the same network. Depending on the route, additional information such as a memo may be required.7
The receiving service’s support matters as much as the sending app’s choices. A general statement that a wallet accepts crypto is insufficient. Ask whether the specific account accepts PYUSD deposits on the precise network being selected.
For example, if a recipient’s instructions specify PYUSD on one network, choosing a cheaper network creates a different transfer. A familiar-looking address does not establish that the receiving service will credit it. Resolve any mismatch before authorizing the payment.
Venmo says crypto transactions cannot be canceled or reversed.2 For unfamiliar destinations, a small test amount, subject to the displayed minimums and fees, can help verify the instructions before a larger transfer. It reduces the amount exposed to a mistake but adds another transaction and cannot guarantee future delivery.
Read fees and timing as separate questions
Venmo does not charge for buying, selling, or holding PYUSD, or sending it to eligible Venmo or PayPal accounts.1 Its fee schedule lists external transfers as carrying a variable network fee, displayed before confirmation and paid in the cryptocurrency being sent. Receiving crypto carries no Venmo fee.9
Timing has another set of conditions. Venmo describes transfers to other Venmo users as immediate, while external wallet transfers can take minutes or hours depending on the network. The app provides an estimate.7
Newly purchased crypto may also be unavailable for transfer while the original funding payment settles. Venmo’s FAQ describes release within up to seven days or a follow-up message in that situation.2 Seeing a purchase in your account is therefore insufficient evidence that it can already fund an outgoing transfer.
If the recipient sells crypto, Venmo says proceeds are typically available in the account immediately, although a sale or its proceeds can be delayed or reviewed.10 Moving those dollars to a bank is a further step: the current fee schedule distinguishes free standard withdrawals from paid Instant Transfers.9 Count each stage when planning a deadline.
A hypothetical $240 repayment
Suppose Elena owes Marcus $240 after a shared trip. Both are eligible adult users, and Marcus initially asks for PayPal because that is where he manages personal payments. Elena should first establish whether he wants a regular payment or specifically wants PYUSD. Familiarity with PayPal does not answer that question.
Now assume Marcus explicitly chooses 240 PYUSD at an external wallet and supplies verified receiving instructions. Elena checks that the same network is available, that the balance is transferable, and that the preview shows the agreed amount reaching Marcus.
Imagine the preview shows a network fee of 0.60 PYUSD in addition to a 240 PYUSD transfer. These numbers are hypothetical, not a published network price. Elena would need 240.60 PYUSD for that preview. If her entire available balance were 240 PYUSD, she would need to resolve the shortfall before paying the full agreed amount.
Marcus then checks his receiving wallet, rather than treating Elena’s screenshot as final proof of receipt. They keep the transaction reference with their repayment record. If he later converts the tokens into another currency, that is a separate decision and cost from Elena’s repayment.
The example illustrates why a useful payment instruction names the asset and net amount to receive. Agreeing only on the original dollar debt leaves the fee allocation and destination uncertain.
Keep records and check reward eligibility
Retain the amount sent, recipient, selected network, fee, and transaction reference. For an unexpected transaction or suspected account compromise, Venmo’s security guidance directs users to contact support promptly with transaction details.4 Use the support route inside the app instead of relying on an unsolicited offer to recover funds.
Rewards deserve a separate check. Venmo’s current rewards guidance requires enrollment, at least $1 of PYUSD, an eligible account in good standing, and a valid Form W-9. It limits the program to the United States, excluding New York. Rewards use a variable rate shown in the app and are paid monthly in PYUSD.11
A payment should succeed on its own terms: the correct recipient receives the agreed asset and amount, through a supported route, within an acceptable timeframe. Keeping rewards separate from that assessment makes it easier to judge whether PYUSD actually serves the recipient’s needs.
